hi,

i don't know how much shuttle service is costing you from LA to San Diego. the other options
available are by Greyhound (nationwide bus service, get your tickets online at www.greyhound.com
just for $15 for LA to SD and might have to pay little extra for your baggage as you might have
three big bags and one hand bag, you might have to travel by local bus service or shuttle or taxi
to commute from airport to greyhound terminal) or Amtrak (nationwide train service,
www.amtrak.com, costs you $28 for LA to SD, again you have to commute from airport LAX to amtrak
terminal). Most of the cities Greyhound and Amtrak terminals are really nearby, so it's your
choice to choose between them. i would recommend amtrak as it is very comfortable to travel after
your tiring air journey of more than 20 hrs.

> i plan to take the porter shuttle service from LA to San
> Diego. plz let me know any other possible ways(cheaper too).

hi,

congrats for getting a step further towards your career goal !! now you must be looking for the way further and lemme help you out a little for that.

for registration process, ofcourse try to get your courses registered on the registration date. do you know anything about e-services ?? otherwise visit https://sunspot.sdsu.edu/e-services/esp_student_index.html, i am also creating a web-log for Sanskriti, where I am posting all the answers I gave to every new students and eventually those will be part of FAQs after a lot of editing work. you can visit http://sdsusanskriti.blogspot.com/ and you will find your answer for registering your classes too.

good luck and bon voyage

hi,

yah, there are a few geeks around, ofcourse including me, but if you want them as roomies, then u might want to look for newcomers. and if u need some help regarding regsitering courses, then just shoot it to me, i will be glad to help you. please register yourself ASAP coz courses here goes really fast and i would like you to take an advantage of one week early registration as a new comer and it will be great if you can add a couple of courses for me too ;) in order to register your courses online first look at your status at webline.sdsu.edu and select register courses. enter your sdsu id 999###### and your pin which is your birthdate in the fromat of mmddyy

here is the reply i gave to another new comer.

i would recommed you to get registered on the day of registration, which means remove any holds you have on your application most commonly F-hold (insurance, which can be paid later, but you have to give commitment by filling out the pink form you get with your I-20 and faxing it over International student center). the other hold might be I-hold (immunization hold, but for that you get the time for whole semester and don't have to worry about that one for fall semester). now the only advantage of early registration is to get the desired classes. and it is very important to get the desired classes if you are a computer science major. otherwise there is no problem getting desired courses in other departments. and as a new comer for fall semester, you have an advantage of registering your classes one week earlier than regular students.

hi,

my first concern is accomodation. i'm male & didn't
have any reservations.

if some computer geeks r present .... would be of great help.

hi,

i m joining sdsu with cs as major. i already sent u a mail. but u did not reply.

So tell as to how many units that a student should take/sem.

>> At least 9 units per sem for full time student

what are popular courses.should I start from the 600 level courses.

>> i liked 660, 662, 683, 635 all these courses two thumbs up !!! u can look for 670 (but i din't like prof as he is grumpy old man). never ever take any course with prof nenad marovac. see the reviews of profs at ratemyprofessors.com

how many courses should a student normally take.

>> recommended 3 courses per sem, if you are in hurry and capable of doing many things at a time u can go for more.

is there any course that is required to be taken?

>> depends on your undergrad major, they must have given you 560 adn 570 as prereq, right ??

should i select any minor course from other dept or something like that.

>> look for some courses from electrical dept.

i hope ur are not busy.

>> yah i'm unfortunately !!
Hi Sachin,

I tried registering into my portal account using my Student Id no,but it says that my student id no does not exist in the system. I tried reseting my account but no use,it just flashes a message saying that either my username or password is invalid and when i cross checked my student id it is invalid.

What do i do? Please do mail back asap.

ANS:

have you paid your registration or make sure you are registered student at SDSU by sending an email to admissions@sdsu.edu and visit their website at http://arweb.sdsu.edu/es/admissions/ for further info.

it will be really helpful if you attend the orientation. you will come to know lots of things
about SDSU, international student life in US and of course u get a chance to make new friends and
look for roommates (if u haven't found any).

you can pay your fees after coming here. it's pretty flexible system for international students
for their first semester. but i will recommend you to get your F-hold (insurance) removed before
you come here in order to register for classes, (especially if you are comp sci major, because
classes go really fast and it becomes very tough to get into the class after third day of the
registration date). any other major it's fine even if you get your hold removed after coming here.

well there is the requirement of taking atleast 9 credits (3 courses mostly) for a graduate full
time students, and for TAs they can take 6 credits (2 courses) as they have extra load for
teaching. i would advise you to take 9 credits only if you are working 20 hrs/week.

the summer semester break is almost three months. it starts from may end and goes upto august
end.

off campus work is internship / summer job. it must be related to your field of studies.

most of them have got job or internship. business program at SDSU is very popular in US
compared to other programs.

> 4)what duration do i get a visa for.the I-20 mentions the program to be for 30 months.what do i
> say if the visa officer asks me the length of the program.the program is of 30 units.

visa duration depends on the policy for current scenario. at my time they were giving the visa
for 5 years with multiple entries. i donno what's happening now, just start asking people around
who r getting visa. mostly visa offices don't ask for the length of the program, but if they do
then tell them 2 and a half years or lesser.

Wed, 11 Jun 2003

yes your figures are correct. $1088 is registration fees per semester, $282 per unit and minimum 9
units are mandetory for an international student to be full time. also don't forget your insurance
which is around $530 per year. i don't know where you got the number of 8 units, but as far as i
know it's minimum 9 units.

summer semester is NOT mandetory, you can take break and work off campus with the permission from
INS. i don't have any idea of maximum time you can take for studies, but mostly you can take as
much time as u want before your visa status expires.

it's all mere luck to get visa. yah we are all here on student visa and none is citizen (yet !!).

yah, it really increases your chances to get visa if you get admit in high ranked university, but it doesn't mean that they don't give visa for low ranked university. what you have to do is be prepared for some good questions aobut the university, like

tell me something about SDSU ?? (and it's part of cal state universities more than 100 yrs old, it's one of the top ranked universities for business dept. engineering and sciences are also very popular.)

why are you going to SDSU ?? (students start giving answers same as above, which i think not required, just answer for my Master's program in blah blah)

are you going to stay in US after your studies ?? (not relevant to university, but most obvious question to answer "no" and also be prepared to defend that answer)

so start your research aobut the university and all the best with everything.

Hello there ,

I am an Indian giving exams of my final semester in BE(CSE). I
have an i-20 of SDSU allowing me to do MS from there. But I have not
yet applied for visa, I have contacted a number of visa councellors
majority of which say that visa for this university is very difficult
because it is low ranked. But very recently when I saw this group
SDSU Sanskriti existing in SDSU , it sparked my hopes because you all
would have got visa that is why you are there. But then it is also
possible that you r citizens of USA. So please tell me the general
trend that, do Indians get visa for SDSU. And a personal estimate
about what are my chances of getting visa.

for the on campus job scenario here, it's been pretty good so far, but now it's not being so
welcoming these days, as california state is going through a budget problems. but if you try hard
and target some good places, you will definitely end up with an on campus job. some of the good
places to look for jobs are library, Aztec shops, student computing lab, physical plant,
Telecommunication network services, some departmental labs etc.

dept is cutting the hours for GA/TAs so they are very hard to get. but still try your best.

here are the answers....
>Can i do it anytime
> before july28th after consulting my graduate advisor.

i don't think so, u will be able to do your registration before 28th of july. i forgot your major,
but if it's computer science, do make sure u get all your desired classes registered exactly on
the date of registration. because the classes go really fast for CS dept and if u don't get ur
desired ones, then u have to crash them. and crashing is big pain here. in order to get your
classes registered on the day of registration, u have to make sure you clear all your holds on
your account. one of the important holds is F-hold, which is your insurance hold. just make sure
you fill out that pink little form you recieved in your packet and FAX IT to the ISC ASAP.

>I have asked for august 26th to be my
> orientation date,so when should i land up in SDSU?

it will be really helpful, if you arrive here in first week of august, and get familiar with the
system here before you start your studies and everything. in order to get any on campus job you
need to have social security number, so apply for that as soon as you arrive here. start looking
for accomodation off-campus (on-campus dorms are very expensive, as you can not share it with
desired number of people). and that will be good if you can manage to get in touch with other new
comers and start searching for accomodation together. we can help you to get temporary
accomodation. we don't have that organized system yet, but sanskriti is good platform to ask for
temporary accomodation.
if you know some rental websites like apartmentguide.com or any other then look for zip codes
92115, 92182. and the name of the area is most likely "College Area".

all the best for everything. do lemme know for further help.
Sun, 25 May 2003

the only thing i can say here is san diego state university is not any of the ranked universities, but as beign a state university, it has very low tuition fees as everything, even if there is a tremendous increase in tuition for last one year. there are pretty fare chances to get an oncampus job here, but TA/RA/GAs are very rare in comp sci dept.

so what i would suggest that compare the fees for all the colleges as u have many state universities in the list. try to get a word out from other uni students. and at last, visa is a mere luck, so whatever university you select, just do the complete research on that uni and be prepared for any questions regarding university. don't give them a hint that u r planning to stay here in US after ur studies and keep ur documentation organised and handy. and i m damn sure u will win the game.
so all the best for everything and lemme know if u have any further queries.
Tue, 20 May 2003

well...

i din't say that don't join SDSU !! i've to be honest with every information i give you.
california state is going through budget problem and that's the harsh fact. the only positive side
of sdsu is low fees and that's it !! computer science dept here is good for nothing. very few
profs u will find really into their field of specialization. no scope for research, as any cal
state doesn't have any kind of PhD program in CS dept.

the best way to make a decision is make a list of priorities from your side, like consider all the
criteria of fees, quality of studies, financial aid, job opportunities etc and put them in the
order of your priority. and then go for the one which comes up with the most points. i had to pay
my tuition fees by my own, else all my monthly expenses was covered by the on campus job.

so that's pretty much it i've to say. all the best for future.
Sat, 26 Apr 2003

here r the answers for ur queries...

1. What is the quality of courses...
well, as far as CS dept is concerned, not that good quality of professors, so the quality of courses also degrades. there is not like specialization in particular field in CS, e.g. software engg, AI or networking. there r scattered number of courses in different fields.

2. Research areas and professors in those areas..
as i already mentioned about the quality of professors, there r hardly couple of profs who r really involved into their subject. the main prob is none of cal state uni has PhD program, so u won't find any hard core research projects which will fetch some funding.

3. Assistanship scene. Do most Indian students there get assitanships RAs or TAs?
dude, bad scenario, i m feeling bad to say that the cal state is going through severe funding problems right now. so all the fundings for TA and GA s cut down. so it will be definitely your great fortune if u get one.

4. What about placement..do companies hire a lot from SDSU?
again, sorry dude !!! career fairs r just there for the sake of name !! companies come on campus, and give u good .. colorful flyer saying that go to our online site and submit ur resume !!! so the only way to get into a good one, get some good references inside the company.

the only advantage of SDSU is the tuition fees r very low and the business dept is very popular among other US universities.

hope this will help u to take the decision.
Thu, 17 Apr 2003

you can visit this link http://bfa.sdsu.edu/fm/co/cashiers/regfees.html for registration fees and per unit tuition fees info. and insurance will cost you around 600$ per year.

for this score you have chances to get admit at SDSU, i wouldn't say very good !! but it might be a different case for you as you r already here in US and already enrolled in a university. so try your best.
Thu, 17 Apr 2003

hi,
as far as living expenses are concerned, san diego is little expensive !! but ofcourse if u r willing to share and two bed appt with 5 other roomies or one bedroom with two other people, then ur rent might come around 200 - 250 $/month.

getting admit here for this score, it depends on what field you want to pursue your masters degree in !!! it might be little difficult to get in comp science or electircal for this score. but u never know !!!

offcampus jobs are possible, but i donno how safe they r nowadays due to war !! but there are some shopping malls here where u might find a job. and on campus job used to be in plenty, but now due to the budget prob cal state is going through, they r cutting off the hours for on campus jobs. so kind of tough to get into one.

do mail me for further assistance.

hi shantanu,

congratulations for getting visa and admit to SDSU. as a new comer you might find this article very helpful Life In US (it is a long one, but worth to read and consider).

most of the infrastructures and transportation systems in US are wheelchair accessible, so it won't be any problem for you. on campus housing has a big waiting list on it, so i don't know how much time it takes to get the confirmation. there are other off-campus housing available which are
also very close to campus, so worth considering them too.

for the list of the books, you can visit http://bookstore.aztecshops.com/aztec/textbooks.asp and
it is quite interactive website to find out about the text book for particular section of the course for particular professor. this site will tell the USD price for the text book, but you may get the indian print edition for the same books very cheap.

you might be looking for airport pickup when u arrive, for that you can contact Emily Maxon at ISC, her email id is emaxon@mail.sdsu.edu

do let us know if u need further help for the same.

hi shrinivas,

congrats to get admit at SDSU. i m doin MS in CS at SDSU. following are the questions i answered to another new comer at SDSU. almost same as u asked ;)

1)what r tution fees & living expenses at SDSU?
for tution fees it used to 927$ registration and 246 $ /credit hour. but from next fall there is a fee increase and it's gonna be 974 $ registration and 281 $/credit hr. so if u r planning to take 9 credit hrs each semester which is min requirement then it's gonna be 3503 $ for tuition fees. then u have to get student insurance initially that's 517$ for a year.

about the living expenses that totally depends on u and it includes rent, groceries, utilities (gas, electricity, phone etc), travelling and others. now where i live, it's two bed - one bath appt (total rent is 925$/mnth) and we five people share it. as california is expensive in terms of living cost, so i pay 185 $ /mnth for rent. for utilities it comes to 15 $/mnth per head. and groceries i pay around 100 $/mnth and again it depends on u. for my case it comes to 300 $/mnth. so u can count 350 $/mnth at max.

2)what is aid scene like?

as i said earlier that there is fee increase from next fall, u must have got the idea of aid scene over here. not even one person doing MS got fee waiver from last two semesters. yah if u r doin PhD, then very good chances to get waiver, but there r not PhD prog offered by SDSU for mech dept. scholarships for international students are very rare and u have to be extraordinarily outstanding at academics to get it. u can try this site for scholarship application and other aids

3)how many indians r there in MS- Mech?

i know three students for mech dept, u can email them abt mech dept info.

4)on campus jobs??

now this is only way we r surviving here, an oncampus jobs. i haven't heard a single desi who doesn't have oncapmus job. GA and grading can be easily got in EE. TA is little difficult. and if u don't get any of them there still many places to consider for job that is library, computing lab, aztec shops, lab assistant in any other dept etc. so u will definitely get an oncampus job here. and min wages here is 6.75 $/hr.

i donno abt the other univs, i've just heard of them. recently i've been to colorado springs, Univ of Colorado Colorado Springs over there is okay. donno abt colorado state univ, is it in denver or boulder ?? colorado has some good opportunities and cheaper in living (as people over there say that, but i din't find much difference !!!). that's all i can say abt colorado. better u select the univ by the opportunities u get over there and of course expenses, aid scenario r the imp factors to be considered.

okay my friend, hope i've answered ur queries. do keep in touch.

take it easy

Some Course Reviews for Computer Science Department

CS 670 is fine if u already know operating system (i was wondering whether u r given 560 & 570 as prerequisite or not ?? coz they r giving them to everyone irrelavant to the background of the student.). there is no particular book for this subject. i've another frnd sunil who took his course last semester and he knows the book for the subject and has a copy of it. and u can always find the books for the subject from the previous semesters schedule. just go to springs 2002 and fall 2001 schedules and after clicking on the subject u will find the required book for the subject. u can find the links for the previous semester links at the bottom of fall 2002 schedule.

662, i donno abtt he subject, but prof root is really good (as i took 660 with him), he makes the subject fun and u'll definitely enjoy it. so u can go with any of his subjects. very easy going prof.

robotics is good i heard, i had op sys with prof vuskovic. little rude prof and expects much more from u. his concepts r really good as far as robotics is concerned (op sys is not his field, so don't take op sys with him). gives rigorous assignments.

speech data acquisition, they r working on some sony project, i attended a presentation. seems to be a good one. just have a look at previous semester schedules and find out the texts for everyone. actually they will post all the books for each subject on fall 2002 schedule too but
that will be after semester starts.

abt 550, when i came here i was firm to specialize in artificial intelligence. after taking 550 i dropped that idea !!! AI is more of theory than application in SDSU. no labs, just class study. u might enjoy ur first project for game programming. but then when it goes to other stuffs u start
taking naps during the class. lewis is good prof, but too fast in speech, he gave me hard time to grasp his speech with his accent. i have an old edition of the book (2nd) and he asks for the latest edition. forgot the name of the book again u can find it out from the fall 2001 schedule.

that's all for the subjects u asked. if u can bring one book for me called "Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software , Gamma, Helm, Johnson, Vlissides, Addison-Wesley, 1995 ". it's like bible for software developers.

u should take a course of prof whitney, he is offering client server prog this semester. he is genious !!! nothing more to say. i take his courses blindly, whatever he offers. not so easy going, expects more from u as vuskovic, but u will get more from whitney for sure !!!! go for it. don't know abt the book yet, but i can tell u before this sunday.

let me know for further details adn help. getting late right now. hope i answered the questions properly.

hi amit,

the univs u have listed seem to be fine. u can also apply to FDU, new jersy (visit www.fdu.edu, guaranteed I-20 and Scholarship) and lamar univ, texas (www.lamar.edu). for other resources to find out about univs may be this link can help u http://directory.google.com/Top/Reference/Education/Colleges_and_Universities/Guides/

about san diego state, there are fair chances to get admit here with your score, so i think shouldn't be a problem. also we've got some good resources to get an on-campus jobs (confirmed u will get one).

so that's pretty much it. okay, do write me for further help.

hi mitesh,

i think u have to pay registration fees before you register for your classes on 29th. i don't have any idea about the commitment form option for registration fees u can always contact cashiers office (visit http://bfa.sdsu.edu/fm/co/cashiers/), but yah u can definitely pay your fees online and just visit http://www.sdsu.edu/e-services/ and u will come to know about all the online services available for students. and paying fees online is one of them. i think u can pay it by credit card too but they charge some extra 20-25 bucks for that.

the link for courses offered in the previous years u can find the link at the bottom of any schedule page, let's say the fall 2002 schedule page http://www2.sdsu.edu/cgi-bin/schedule/browse=dept/command=search/dept=CS/semester=fall02/balance=true and just go at the bottom of the page and u will find links to schedules of Summer 2002, Spring 2002, fall 2001 etc. upto fall 1993 !!!

okay, best of luck and keep mailin me. and also tell me the address of the place u r gonna live ??

nice choices for the course. computer security is taken by one of the best profs at SDSU so go for it without hesitation, i donno abt the text book as i might be takin the course with you !! when u come to know abt text books ?? now, u must be aware of the "fall 2002 class schedule", for a particular course there is a link on it to course page and around july end or august start they will put the text name on the top of the course page. now here each prof has his own choice for text. let's say data structure (CS310) is taken by different prof in two sections then not necessarily both r using the same text !!!! but for the courses which are taken by only one prof for a long time, u can find out the text for the course looking at some previous class scheules like "fall 2001", mostly text doesn't change if the course is taken by same prof for last few semesters.

oop & design, it is taken by Prof Donald (one of the grad advisors) this time which was used to be taken by Prof Whitney (who is takin client server programming this time). both of them are very good profs and especially Prof Whitney is my favourite. i took OOP & Design (535) and Adv OOP & Design (635) with prof whitney since last two semesters. u will have to learn smalltalk (an OO prog language) as a part of this course. for text book again u can refer to the Fall 2001 schedule, i m not sure Donald will use the same text as Whitney did. but i would rather prefer the online material Whitney has on his site for this course, that is www.eli.sdsu.edu and then go to "My On-line Courses" link. but i donno how good Donald will be teaching this course, keep ur fingers crossed !!! actually he is C++ genious, so donno how good he will be at teaching smalltalk. to learn more abt smalltalk just visit www.whysmalltalk.com.

abt Client Server programming.... u know what i take courses blindly which are offered by Whitney !!! IMHO just take it without giving a second thought. even i m not much aware of the course content and text and i will be definitely taking that course.

multimedia systems ...... hmmmm.... i don't generally prefer taking multimedia courses, rather i would learn them by myself. so don't have much idea abt the course or prof. yah i learnt from someone that the course covers html 4 and if u create a web page with good outlook irrelevant to ur coding or scripting behind that page, u definitely get A in the course !!!!

now most imp thing here, the courses u mentioned have only one section each and those are some of the good and hot favourite courses at SDSU, and each course can accomodate upto 60 students max. and the rush of students for computer science is so high that such good courses gets full just in one or two days after registration opens (which is far before the semester starts), so as a result u end up "crashing" the course, in which u go the class of the particular course on the first day and u sign ur name on the crash list with other 30 crashers !!! so the first day of the class and u will see 90 students in the class strength of 60 !! then if the prof puts some weired condition of prereqs for the course (like CS 310 is mendatory and must have taken at SDSU only etc) to get rid from some of the crashers. then u have to attend the class regularly till three weeks with no "bunk" in the class to put urself in the top of the crashers list. and after all these jeopardy u still don't manage to crash the course and end up taking some another 300 or 400 level course to maintain ur 9 credit hrs as an international student !!!

so in my suggestion, try to be online on the exact day and time of ur registration, which can be obtained from webline.sdsu.edu (which is available through 7 am to 7 pm PST)by entering ur student id# starts with 999-##-### and ur date of birth in MMDDYY format. then just follow the instructions on the screen. i donno whether u have received ur registration date and time with ur I-20 package or not. if you have recieved them then try to be online on the day and time at webline.sdsu.edu exactly as it is mentioned. and then to add courses in ur account just follow the simiple steps on screen. now before u can add courses in ur account, u must have cleared all ur holds. now generally there is only one hold for all international students and that is F-hold for your insurance. so what u can do is u can fill out the "pink form" which u might have received with ur package which says sth abt ur commitment to pay the amount for insurance and mail it to mentioned address or fax it ASAP, this will remove ur F hold and u will be able to add the courses on registration date. and if u r able to add this courses on registration date then u r officially in and no headache for crashing the course !! now one more thing to take into account is u will be able to add five courses during registration. so even if u r gonna take 3 or 4 courses do fill the quota for five courses and u can drop any one or two courses which u don't want afterwards. ofcourse there is a deadline to drop the course too, which might be one week after the semester starts.

that's all i have with me to give u right now. lemme know for further direction.

best of luck

hi,

congrats for getting admit at SDSU. now we five people are already living in two bdroom appt and not planning to accomodate anymore. now there are many other students coming to SDSU this fall. so what u can do is keep in touch with them and decide ur roommates before coming here. and still if u don't find anyone we can temporarily accomodate u at our place till u find another one.

u can always contact emily maxon at ISC (her email is emaxon@mail.sdsu.edu) to find out about other new comers from india.

the place where i live is amost 1 mile far from the uni and we pay 925 $ rent per month so it comes to 185$ per head. utilities adds upto another 100$ in total so per head it comes to 20 bucks. so u may end up paying 210 $ per month for rent and utilities.

my major is computer science and what abt u ??

wish to see u soon.

hi,

here are some suggestions for ur questions.

>> how many days earlier should I arrive in US, so that i can get a decent on campus job.

IMHO it would be better if u arrive 20-25 days earlier and u will get sufficient time to get ur Social Security Number and other processes, as some of the on campus jobs needs ur original SSN card, like aztec shops ask for original SSN card. for other jobs like TA (very rare), GA (little better chances in mech dept), grader, library, computing lab etc don't ask for SSN, but it will be good for u to arrive earlier and start applying everywhere for job.

>>Also please tell me about the living accomodation ie, wether its cheaper in the hostel or to rent it outside.

here u will find two types of accomodations, one is on-campus (i.e. dorms) and the other is off-campus. on-campus housing is very very costly (u may end up paying 400 $/month). so almost all indian students prefer off-campus housing which is cheaper in the sense one appt is shared by 2-6 people depending 1/2 bdroom. the rent of one bdroom appt starts from 500$ and above per month and can be shared by 2-3 persons. two bdroom appt is from 700$ and above per month and can be shared by 4-6 persons. the place where i live is 2 bdroom appt and we five people stay there. and the rent is 925 $/month excluding utilities. and utilities cost us almost 60-70 $/mnth in total for gas, electricity and phone (depending on ur usage). so u end up paying 200 $ per month if u share the appt with 5 people.

>>I have received no aid, so can u tell me if there is any possibility of aid and in what form.

california state is going through a budget problem and due to that it has cut down the budget of all cal state universities. and all state univs will overcome this budget problem by the fees paid by international students. so giving aid to international students is very rare case in state univs. but u can try for that and may check out this webpage http://www.sa.sdsu.edu/fao/

i hope i have answered ur questions satisfacotrily. do keep in touch.

Hi sachin,

Thanks for the email. I am from Pune, and want to do MS in mech engg. I have got my visa and would like to ask you about the travel arrangements. I am in the process of booking a ticket and would like to know how many days earlier should I arrive in US, so that i can get a decent on campus job. My orientation program is on 26 Aug. Also please tell me about the living accomodation ie, wether its cheaper in the hostel or to rent it outside. Please tell me the monthly rent. I have received no aid, so can u tell me if there is any possibility of aid and in what form.

Thanks
Ameya.
hi,

according to university regulations and as an international student u will have to take minimum 9 credit hours per semester. generally all the courses r 3 credit hours each, so u will have to take 3 courses minimum.

for ur application status, i don't know whether u have tried online at https://www2.sdsu.edu/stusvcs/appcheck.html , just try this site and lemme know if anything works out or not, otherwise ask emily maxon at ISC for this. u must have got ur student id or SSN starting with 999-##-###. just enter that with ur birthdate. and try to check the application status.

did they ask for any payments u have to do to receive ur I-20 ?? if no then i think there is sth wrong, just contact emily for that.

wish u all the best

hi,

this is something new for me, even i don't have any idea about it. i think u can take courses at UCSD but u have to make it such a way that the course u r takin at UCSD is strictly a prerequisite for some course at SDSU which u wanna take and only then u can take the course. otherwise there is no way (that's what i think) u can take courses at UCSD and those will be counted for your MS, yah some exceptions are Public Health, Geology etc. which has a joint program with UCSD.

for further details u can contact the respective graduate advisor for the dept.

i m soon gonna lauch a website for new comers.. so please bear with me till the lauching. and i would definitely llike to know from u people that what kind of content u would like to have on the site.

best of luck

hi anshul,

must be busy with the visa preps. here r the answers for ur queries...

do u guys manage to get enough time for your studies after on-campus job & other household chores.Doesn't it affect the grades?

yah, actually it is little tough to manage everything. my roommate took 4 courses last semester and had three different jobs adding upto 20 hrs per week and got three 'A' s. i took three courses and was totally concentrating on studies along with 20 hrs per week job and got A, B+ and B !!!! so that totally depends on your capabilities. if u find it little difficult to manage u can drop a course in between also, and can take it next semester.

How far is the Uni from San Diego city?

SDSU is in San Diego city and it's 1 mile far from my place. u can check out the situation in the map at mapblast.com or mapquest.com putting address 5500 Campanile Dr, San Diego, CA 92182

What is the weather in San Diego like?

san diego is famous for its weather and most of the tourist are attracted to san diego due to its weather and beaches around. its not too hot in summer or too cold in winter, just perfect !!! u won't get such weather anywhere in USA and it's the fact. yah, u will miss snow fall, if u r expecting one !!

hope i have answered the questions as u wanted them in. further queries r welcome.

wish u luck

hi anshul,

congrats to get admit at SDSU. emily must have introduced me to u. yah i m doin MS in CS at SDSU.

1)what r tution fees & living expenses at SDSU?
for tution fees it used to 927$ registration and 246 $ /credit hour. but from next fall there is a fee increase and it's gonna be 974 $ registration and 281 $/credit hr. so if u r planning to take 9 credit hrs each semester which is min requirement then it's gonna be 3503 $ for tuition fees. then u have to get student insurance initially that's 517$ for a year.

about the living expenses that totally depends on u and it includes rent, groceries, utilities (gas, electricity, phone etc), travelling and others. now where i live, it's two bed - one bath appt and we five people share it. as california is expensive interms of living cost, so i pay 185 $ /mnth for rent. for utilities it comes to 15 $/mnth per head. and groceries i pay around 100 $/mnth and again it depends on u. for my case it comes to 300 $/mnth. so u can count 350 $/mnth at max.

2)what is aid scene like?

as i said earlier that there is fee increase from next fall, u must have got the idea of aid scene over here. not even one person doing MS got fee waiver from last two semesters. yah if u r doin PhD, then very good chances to get waiver. scholarships for international students are very rare and u have to be extraordinarily outstanding at academics to get it.

3)how many indians r there in MS-CS & EE respectively?

CS has plenty of indians there, around 20 or sth and almost same in EE.

4)on campus jobs??

now this is only way we r surviving here, an oncampus jobs. i haven't heard a single desi who doesn't have oncapmus job. GA and grading can be easily got in EE. TA is little difficult. and if u don't get any of them there still many places to consider for job that is library, computing lab, aztec shops, lab assistant in any other dept etc. so u will definitely get an oncampus job here. and min wages here is 6.75 $/hr.

so, hope i have answered ur queries clearly. do mail me for further queries.

best of luck
sachin
